New Woodbury County Democratic Party Headquarters:
506 Nebraska in downtown Sioux City, conveniently located between a
Subway shop and Sarah's Candy -- and just a few feet down the block from Steve
King's office! We get the keys on May 15, and then the fun and hard work begins!
5th District Convention:
The 2008 District Convention in Council Bluffs was a big success. See the "Convention
Results" page at www.idp5.org for photos,
results of the elections, final platform, and minutes.
Two of the three national convention delegates elected at the
district convention are from Woodbury County: Tim Bottaro is an
Obama national delegate, and Merci Wolff is a John Edwards national
delegate. Both will be representing us at the Democratic National Convention
next August in Denver.
And Rick Mullin was re-elected to another 2-year term on the Iowa Democratic
Party state central committee.
The 2008 Iowa Caucuses were extremely successful for the Democratic Party in
Iowa. Due to the large numbers of new voter registrations at the caucuses, over
60,000 voters became Democrats.
Right now, Democrats outnumber republicans
by 85,000 voters in Iowa.

Iowa Blue.

New County Chair, Officers Elected
Every two years we are required to hold an election of officers by the new
central committee members elected at the precinct caucuses. On March 26, the
following were elected to 2-year terms to serve the Woodbury County Democratic
Party:
Special thanks to Teresa Wolff our outgoing Chair for her dedication
and hard work in the last two years. Few can understand the thousands of hours
she put in or the pressures a county chair puts up with for their party (and with no pay!)
Teresa is an amazing woman and we are proud to have had her leadership and good
spirits.
Our new chair, David Somsky, has served the Woodbury County Democrats
for over 30 years, as previous chair, vice-chair, and committee leader. He
brings his long experience as a teacher along with his dedication to electing
Democrats and including our local volunteers at every level.
We are also adding a new co-vice chair, Greg Guelcher and a
co-secretary, Claryce Evans. We are very fortunate to have these extra hands
onboard, since 2008 will be an important year with MANY tasks to complete if we
are to elect our local, state and national Democratic candidates.

Woodbury County Democratic Convention Results:
The March 15 convention at West High in Sioux City had enormous turnout
from both the rural precincts as well as the metro area, and those who
participated enjoyed some wonderful speeches and spirited debate on the
issues.
For those interested in the vote totals of delegates elected to the State
and District Conventions from Woodbury County, here are the final results:
Clinton: 20 delegates
Edwards: 14 delegates
Obama: 34 delegates
Thank you to Teresa Wolff and the rest of the executive committee for the
hard work they performed behind the scenes to make the convention possible,
and to everyone who participated in the platform creation, rules
formulation, and the arrangements committees for their efforts.

the final version of the platform.

and Alternate Delegates elected to the state and district conventions.
Note from the Credentials Chair, Rick Mullin:
Special thanks to the help and oversight I received from Bob McDaniel
from the Hillary Clinton campaign staff, and from Josh Robinson from the
Iowa Democratic Party who were at my elbows as the "special problem"
delegates and alternate delegates waited to be seated. Bob and Josh were
extremely helpful in making sure that the rules were followed and that
everyone who worked thru the process was able to be seated and participate
as delegates. I would also like to thank Renee Welte for help with assuring
data integrity, Eric Newhouse for assistance in
programming the computer at the last minute for special reports, and to the
entire group of volunteers who staffed the sign-in tables. |
John F. Kennedy, 1960:
What do our opponents mean when they apply to us the label "Liberal?" If
by "Liberal" they mean, as they want people to believe, someone who is soft
in his policies abroad, who is against local government, and who is
unconcerned with the taxpayer's dollar, then ... we are not that kind of
"Liberal." But if by a "Liberal" they mean someone who looks ahead and not
behind, someone who welcomes new ideas without rigid reactions, someone who
cares about the welfare of the people -- their health, their housing, their
schools, their jobs, their civil rights, and their civil liberties --
someone who believes we can break through the stalemate and suspicions that
grip us in our policies abroad, if that is what they mean by a "Liberal,"
then I'm proud to say I'm a "Liberal."

The folks
over at The Progressive Democracy Corps have released their Steve King
information website: www.kingwatch.org - they're
keeping an eye on your congressman.
KingWatch has enough information to make any thinking person
sick about the stuff congressman Steve
King says and does.
Did you know that Steve King is protecting the
cockfighting industry (and has accepted campaign money from their PAC?)
Or that King built a model of the anti-Mexican wall he says that he himself
would love to build "and make a ton of money." Read a few of King's quotes -
it will help you with your weight-loss program.
This website is a great resource for everyone in the 5th District.
| Words of Wisdom for Our Country: |
| "A little patience, and we shall see the reign of witches pass
over, their spells dissolve, and the people, recovering their true
sight, restore their government to its true principles. It is true that
in the meantime we are suffering deeply in spirit, and incurring the
horrors of a war and long oppressions of enormous public debt.... If the
game runs sometimes against us at home we must have patience till luck
turns, and then we shall have an opportunity of winning back the
principles we have lost, for this is a game where principles are at
stake." Thomas Jefferson
(letter to John Taylor of
Philadelphia, June 4, 1798, after passage of the Alien and Sedition Act)
